Info

Taupō BMX Club welcomes prospective new members.

It can be a tad daunting when you first come along to the track to check out BMX - remember that we are here to help you out and get you riding!

Here's a few tips to help you out.

Our club nights during daylight savings are on Wednesday evenings with registration from 5.15pm.

Club night pre-registration can be done via this form:  https://forms.gle/mfVXcLW4iwfYJm1T6

It's a good idea if it's your first time here, to get there as early as possible to have a chat with the ladies in the points hut, (that's what we cll the garage near the finish line) as they will be able to give you advice and hire you the gear and/or bike that you may need.

Working Bees

Continuous upgrading and general maintenance of the track are essential to providing a safe, fun and challenging track. We endeavour to hold Working Bees regularly in order to keep on top of all essential tasks. All members are expected to contribute to the upkeep of our facility whenever possible and many hands make light and quick work.

BMX NZ Race Meets

It is important to get there on time. There are usually a few members attending the race meets and we usually set up together as a club. When you get to the venue you will need to register. Then there will be time to practise before the racing starts. The racing format is similar to racing at club night.

  • At the beginning of the BMX NZ race season there is a new calendar that BMX NZ brings out. These dates are emailed to all club members and will be posted on the club website and notice board. BMX NZ's website also has calendar details. http://bmxnz.co.nz. There are two other sites that are important to bookmark - https://bmxevents.nz and https://nzbmx.club - these two sites allow online entry to race meets around NZ.
  • BMX NZ emails the flyers for these race meets. The flyers give the criteria for entry and other relevant information i.e. Date, registration, order of racing, cost, and closing date for the entries- You are responsible for your entries which must be accompanied by the correct payment.
  • The only entries that have to be sent in by the club are entries for the North and South Island Championships, Oceanias and the BMX NZ Nationals Championships.
  • The club will post the flyers on the club website and notice board and will have spare entry forms in the points hut.

Kiwi Sprocket Rocket Programme (Junior BMX)

Kiwi Sprocket Rocket is a skills based biking programme which target is children aged 7 years and under but relevent for beginners of any age. This programme has been developed based on a modified version of BMX and teaches children fundamental biking skills that specifically cater to children’s size and skill level.

Sprocket Rocket was originally developed by BMX NSW in 1994 as a competition based programme and later expanded as a very successful skill development programme by Bicycle Motocross Australia.

In 2004 BMX New Zealand further adapted the programme and it was successfully introduced nationally in 2005.

More specifically the program aims at providing:-

  • Fundamental biking skills
  • Safe and Fun learning environment
  • 24 progressive sessions
  • Qualified coaches at every session
  • Promotion of participation and skill development rather than a win-at-all costs culture
  • Skills required to go on to compete in competitive biking

The programme concentrates on four specific fundamental skills areas including pedalling, balance, braking and corning. These skills are fundamental for all biking activities regardless of the participants age.

The Kiwi Sprocket Rocket programme consists of 24 progressive sessions that teach skills through a series of fun drills and skills that children just love.

Each child registered receives a Kiwi Sprocket Participation and Skill Log Book, an interactive resource to record their personal progress. All children receive a cool Kiwi Sprocket Rocket Number Plate which can be displayed proudly on their bikes.

When your child registers they will receive The Kiwi Sprocket Rocket kit which includes the following:-

- Jersey Patch (to be sewn to rider’s jersey)
- Kiwi Sprocket Rocket Number Plate
- Kiwi Sprocket Rocket sticker
- Coaching Skills Award Logbook
- Kiwi Sprocket Rocket Guidebook
- Rule Book (if available)
