Welcome to the 4th newsletter for the New Zealand (NZL) riders in the lead up to the 2013 UCI BMX World Championships.
These newsletters are sent out to keep the BMX community informed - Please take the time to read them.
27 days to go – and counting...
Clothing:
Jersey Naming:
If you are placing your name on the back of the New Zealand 2013 Jersey – please use your surname and in BLACK font. You are representing New Zealand and nick-names are not really appropriate at this level. Suggested font is —Impact 50-60 mm
HAKA:
It has been mentioned that some may perform the Haka at the end of the Opening Ceremony within the Stadium. It would look/be pretty awesome if people were wearing their supporter’s kit or Club shirts (as some clubs are having these made for World Championships). Please practice the words/actions - to make the best impact.
ACCREDITED PERSONNEL:
Team NZL Staff assisting our riders in the PITs will be;
Sue Walker (Team Manager)
Laurel Freebairn
Ally Barry
Kylee Stevens
Malcolm McOnie
Ces Hill
Murray Goodwin
Sue Anderson
Malcolm is designated as coach and may be able to help some riders but we are not there to tell you how to ride or coach you.
NUMBER FOUR:
- It was recently pointed out to me, the number 4 is an important number to remember;
- UCI only need to allow each competitor four laps prior to racing (this includes the two practice sessions and the pre-race warm up session)
- The Top 4 go through to the next stage – top 4 qualifiers, top 4 in 1/8, 1⁄4’s, semis. (attempt to be in Top 4 in each race and you will be fine)
- The last 4 digits on your wristband must equal the last 4 digits on your bike barcode sticker
PRACTICE SESSIONS:
At the beginning of each practice session, there will be no gates, riders need to roll straight off the gate and around the track, no stopping on the gate or track please.
Day One practice, do not go hard out – it’s practice and we don’t want to see you not compete at the World Championships due to an injury during practice sessions. Once we know riders are comfortable on the track, we will then run gates.
Day Two practice, you will now be more familiar with the track and you can confirm your lines and positions on the track – remember it is still practice – be careful.
Practice Sessions for New Zealand riders only:
Non New Zealand citizen riders are NOT able to ride during the New Zealand practice sessions, even if they ‘borrow’ a New Zealand jersey. This will result in an instant disqualification and New Zealand being fined.
If a New Zealand resident rider has entered with another team, then that rider will need to practice with that team.
PITS AREA:
This is the designated area, at the back of the Vector Arena that only riders for the session can bring their bikes into. There are “gates/fences” (like the ones we use during our Nationals in staging) that define a country’s area. This area is where the riders can eat, sit, relax, focus and talk to other riders. It will be under cover, but remember it is winter and can get quite cold (or hot) under marquees. Please bring a wind breaker and warm clothing.
As riders go through each area in staging, they are “penned” in their class. This helps the officials and riders know where they are in the order of racing.
NEW ZEALAND OFFICIALS:
There are many New Zealand officials working during the World Championships – please respect them and their role. Other country riders may try and push boundaries and as we are in the majority, please help our officials do their best in their role.
REGISTRATION:
You may collect your race packs on Sunday 21st from 7.30-9.00 at the Waldorf Stadium Apartments (400m from Vector Arena) or on Monday 10.30-12 noon.
The actual rider must attend this registration and confirm they will be partaking in the World Championships – this means Mum, Dad or friends can not pick up packs for other riders – please do not ask as a refusal sometimes offends!!!
Riders who ordered race pants; these will be available at the registration times due to the late delivery from the supplier. We suggest you bring another pair of race pants in case there are any issues with your order. You are able to wear any colour race pants at the World Championships – black or white is preferable – however please ensure the pants comply with the UCI rules.
MEDICAL QUESTIONNAIRE:
The questionnaire is attached to this newsletter and is to be completed by all riders or parents in the case of minors.
Download here: Medical Return - World Championships 2013
I will be personally handling these forms and will keep the details confidential. The documents will be held by the UCI Doctor in the Medical rooms – so that the details are readily available – especially in the case where a rider may be suffering from concussion and not able to talk for themselves. Please take the time to complete the form and email through to this private email address of: bmxworldsmedical@bmxnz.co.nz
Please return these by 1 July 2013.
TRAINING AND FITNESS:
I know a number of clubs have been running weekend events and that these have had big numbers of riders attending.
These have been a great opportunity for you to keep your fitness and track awareness up – thanks to all the clubs and regions that have run these meetings.
There are 2 more meetings to go – Whangarei and Te Awamutu
Accidents and Injury
Should you become injured or for any other reason you are not able to attend the World Championships – please email your details to Christine Misa at admin@bmxnz.co.nz which will allow your details to be removed from the New Zealand entries – If this is completed before 9 July 2013 - you may also request a free ticket to enter the 2 Challenge days.
All the very best over the next couple of weeks and remember, I am here to help, so if you have any questions or concerns, please email me on my World Championships email - bmxworlds.newzealand@gmail.com
